Equipment Used for Fishing Trips

These 4 key pieces of equipment used for fishing trips is a must. I would highly recommend you include these on your next fishing trip or fishing vacation.

1.  Bring Your Own Reel
2.  Bring Your Own Rod
3.  Bring Your Own Line
4.  Bring Your Own Tackle

The first two are obvious.  The second two seem goofy. However, if you are like a lot of my friends who bring their own equipment used for fishing trips, they fish several days after working with the guide on the first day.

Once you contact your fishing guide and tell them you want to bring your own fishing equipment, they will probably suggest the type of line they recommend and specific tackle to bring. Many times they will supply the tackle but always make sure and ask them for their recommendations.

I have learned my lessons well over the years. The airline baggage handlers are rough on equipment. Especially equipment used for fishing.

We highly recommend two pieces of fishing protection that are not that expensive and work well.

A hard case for fishing rods and a hard case for fishing reels.

If you have a lot of experience catching big fish and you own your own equipment used for fishing -salmon or steelhead, bass, walleye or pike then I would highly recommend you take your own fishing gear on your next trip.

I am left handed and it drives me crazy having to use a guide's fishing reel that is geared toward right handed people. Let me take this one step further.

You probably played a little baseball in your life. If you ever spent serious time playing the game, you understand that a barrowed glove, felt funny and didn't shape or mold properly to your hand.

The same can be said about the equipment a guide will provide for you on the fishing trip. I can tell you, they have some monster rods, reels and line. If a client hooks a big fish and they don't know how to land big fish, it will be lost forever. Well, to make up for that inexperience a guide will select a heavy setup.

Another Piece of Equipment Used for Fishing Trips:

  • fishing sunglasses
  • GPS Unit

A good pair of fishing sunglasses are very important and will mean the difference between successful fishing and going home empty handed. Read about the lesson I learned a few years ago.

And finally, we would recommend a GPS unit. My wife calls it a toy but I call it a life saver. Trust me, in heavy fog you either sink or swim and there is no way I was going to sink. Learn the simply trick I used to find "home" safely without any incident during a recent fishing trip in the winter.

We have listed the key travel items you need. If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me.
