I read
every article I could find on night fishing
for walleye and found one article specific to
Lake Roosevelt. I managed to
find a few articles and decided to try all methods
mentioned. Below you can
read what we found out.

Night
Fishing for Walleye on Lake
Roosevelt: overview
- It was written
that there is a magic time (related to the
moon) that walleye would hit. This
particular author said any beach along the
Spokane side of the river would work and
he fished it from the bank.
- we
did find a magic time, but we did learn
you can fish till about 10 pm and then they
stopped bitting
- We
were lazy and used a boat to troll for the
walleye.
- We
also fished the other side of the lake because
that was the closest place to fish related
to our houseboats.
Night
Fishing for Walleye on Lake
Roosevelt: trolling
- We
trolled along the shore in waters from 7 ft
to 20 feet, depending on how close we were
to shore. We caught fish in that zone
mentioned above.
- boat
speed was as slow as we could go making
sure to keep our presentation in the top
2 feet of water, unless it was deep water.
- We
tried to fish the deep water (20 ft depth
and lure at 15 ft) in the upper
half of the range and found that staying
on top was best.
- When
we caught a fish we immediately went back
over that spot and worked it till we didn't
get anymore bites.
Night
Fishing for Walleye on Lake
Roosevelt:
lures
- I
caught one walleye and 2 bass using a Rapala
jointed lure. It was a very small lure and
I noticed that it stayed in the top 6 inches
of water when trolling. This lure
worked best if we were trolling over weed
beds, but it still managed to catch a lot
of weeds.
- 3
inch Sassy Shad. This was our hot
one. It was black with silver speckles.
We caught the majority of fish using
the sassy shad.
Night
Fishing for Walleye on Lake
Roosevelt: results
After
Mike caught 6 bass the first night of trolling
I wasn't convinced it would catch walleye so
I stuck with my rapala at our new northern location.
Basically about 8 miles above 7 Bays
Marina. On our first pass, Mike had
a fish on and lost it, but I also hooked into
a walleye and landed it. That was the one and
only walleye I caught using the rapala. The
remainder of that evening Mike caught 3 walleye
and one bass.
We
went out the next evening (same location) and
landed 3 more walleye. Mike played around
with some other presentations and found minimal
success.
Night
Fishing for Walleye on Lake
Roosevelt: recommendations
I
highly recommend finding a stretch of water
at least 1/4 mile long for trolling. That means
you better scout it out during daylight hours.
Look for an area that is shallow with
a drop off into deeper waters. We tried
to find a stretch that was at least 20 yards
from the beach to deeper waters.
We
never stayed out all night long because we wanted
to get some sleep in order to fish at daybreak.
You
might want to consider looking for a couple
of places on both sides of the river to troll
through. We also wanted to but never tried
to stop the boat and cast in all directions
afer catching a walleye.
I
believe making multiple passes probably scattered
the fish which is why we didn't catch more of
them.
Lastly,
we never fished past 11 pm because the bite
was off. Our last fish caught on any given
evening was 10:05.
Last
year we caught a ton of walleye in our favorite
honey holes. This year we caught 2 walleye
in our favorite honey holes, which made us go
hunting for other spots to catch them in.
We
caught walleye in spots we would have never
imagined possible during the day, but at night
it's a different story.
If
you have fished at night for walleye at Lake
Roosevelt please send me your story and I will
post it on this website for all to read. mailto:riverfront@bentonrea.com
I
can't wait for next year and learning a few
more tricks to help everyone have a fabulous
fishing trip to Lake Roosevelt.
