A
bass fishing trip, quickly turned into the best
walleye fishing trip on the Columbia River,
I have ever seen.

My
fishing buddy for the last year and a half (Dr.
Larry Wise-retired) and I decided to head to
the Columbia River in search of bass. Within
30 minutes of starting to fish for bass the
wind kicked up and almost blew us off the river.
Instead we decided to stay inside the cove near
Crow Butte Island. (Crowe Butte Island
is located in between McNary Dam and John Day
Dam).
I
have fished the upper half of the cove and Larry
had extensive experience in the back half of
the cove. First we tried my area for walleye
and Larry caught a really nice walleye. Several
minutes later he hooked another walleye but
lost him (it was bigger). Larry managed
to lose 2 more nice sized walleye before I could.
As
we approached Larry's walleye fishing hole,
I decided to switch to my favorite Hot Lips
Express. Within a 30 minute span I
had caught a dozen walleye on that crazy Hot
Lips Express.
After
that 30 minute period it went dead but we noticed
another boat who was catching them left and
right. I quickly switched to worms on a bottom
walker and started to catch more walleye. Soon
after that, Larry began to catch more walleye
as well.
We
fished this area for several more hours and
by the time we finished we had our limits with
the largest walleye coming in at 11 pounds.
This
by far was the best walleye fishing trip on
the Columbia River I have ever taken and it
beats last year when Larry caught the 11.5 pound
walleye below John Day Dam.
Once
